How to Use Telematic Auto Insurance

Telematics is the integration of telecommunication and information technology to send and receive data remotely, or to remotely control an object. An example of the use of telematics is an insurance company remotely monitoring your car either through a GPS or from the car's engine control computer. The insurance company can then charge insurance based on the speed you drive, the number of miles you drive, the braking force applied, etc. Safer, more careful drivers will benefit from cheaper insurance by using telematics. Here's how you can sign up for and use telematic auto insurance.

Steps

1. Find an insurance agent or company that offers telematic auto insurance.

Because it's a new product, not all insurance companies offer telematic insurance. Online search engines like findmybestagent.com, 1000agents.com, insuranceagents.com or autoinsurance.net/agents/ can help you find an agent.

2.Sign up for a trial period of telematic insurance.

During this trial period, the insurance company will monitor your driving habits to determine your auto insurance rates.

3. Install the telematic device.

  • Depending on the auto insurance company you choose, you may have to go to a professional to install it, or you may be able to install it yourself.
  • If you get a device you can install yourself, it will go in the onboard diagnostic slot in your car. This slot is usually found below the steering wheel. The device slides into the slot like a cord into an electrical outlet.
4. Drive carefully to keep the rates low.

5. Drive only when necessary.

One of the methods used by the insurance company to determine rates based on telematics is the number of miles driven, and another is the time of day as it is more dangerous to drive at night when visibility is poor.

6. Drive at or below the speed limit.

The insurance company will charge higher rates for drivers who drive above the speed limit.

7. Brake slowly and carefully.

The insurance company will charge higher rates to those who brake at the last moment possible.

8. Compare the rates for telematic insurance to your existing auto insurance.

If you can save money using telematic auto insurance, then sign up; otherwise, continue to use your existing auto insurance.
